Hair Extension FAQs
Everything You Want to Know Before Getting Hair Extensions
Considering hair extensions but have questions? You're not alone.
At FOX & FINCH Salon Studio in Succasunna, NJ, we want you to understand exactly what you're investing in—from your initial consultation and installation to maintenance and at-home care.
We specialize in customized weft extensions designed to add length, fullness or both while creating a natural, seamless result.
Here are some of the questions we're asked most often.
1. Will hair extensions damage my natural hair?
When extensions are properly selected for your hair, professionally installed and correctly maintained, they should not cause unnecessary damage to your natural hair.
Hair health is always a priority at FOX & FINCH. The amount of hair, number of rows, placement, and maintenance schedule should be customized to your natural hair's density and condition.
Following your recommended maintenance schedule and proper home care is equally important. Extensions that are too heavy, improperly maintained or left without maintenance for too long can place unnecessary stress on the natural hair.
2. How much do hair extensions cost?
Hair extensions are a completely customized service, so there isn't one price that fits every guest.
Your total investment depends on factors including the amount of hair needed, desired length and fullness, number of rows, color and the result you're trying to achieve.
During your consultation, we'll determine what you need and provide pricing before ordering your hair.
Extension hair is paid for when ordered. Installation and future maintenance are separate services.
Typical Weft Extension Pricing: $633 for 18" Weft Human Hair Extensions, AND $300 for 1 row of hair installed.
Custom color for extensions is additional.
3. How long do hair extensions last?
There are two different things to consider: the extension hair itself and your installation.
You can reuse your extension hair as long as it remains in good condition. Its lifespan varies considerably depending on hair quality, how frequently it's worn, and how well it's cared for at home.
Your extensions will also require regular salon maintenance as your natural hair grows.
4. How often do my weft extensions need to be moved up?
Most FOX & FINCH weft-extension guests should plan for a mini move-up approximately every 4–5 weeks.
A mini move-up brings the rows back closer to the scalp as your natural hair grows.
We currently allow up to three mini move-ups before requiring a complete removal and reinstall.
Your individual schedule may vary depending on your hair growth, natural hair, lifestyle, and how your extensions are wearing.
5. What type of extensions are best for my hair?
No single extension method is best for everyone.
Your natural hair density, texture, length, condition, lifestyle, and desired result all need to be considered.
FOX & FINCH offers professional weft extension options, including Q-Weft, hand-tied, and machine wefts.
Your consultation helps us determine which option best suits your hair and goals.
6. Do I need a consultation before getting extensions?
Yes. New extension guests require a consultation before ordering hair or scheduling an installation.
We'll evaluate your natural hair, discuss your goals, determine the appropriate length and amount of hair, color-match your extensions, and review your investment and maintenance schedule.
We want you to know exactly what to expect before committing to extensions.
7. Can extensions be used just for volume?
Absolutely—and this is one of our favorite uses for extensions.
Extensions aren't only about creating dramatically longer hair. One or two strategically placed rows can add density and fullness to fine or thinning ends while keeping your current length.
The result can be extremely subtle. People don't necessarily need to know you're wearing extensions—they may simply notice that your hair looks fuller.
8. How do I wash my hair with weft extensions?
You can absolutely wash your hair while wearing weft extensions.
Gently shampoo your scalp and carefully cleanse around your rows without aggressively rubbing or tangling the attachment area.
Condition primarily through the mid-lengths and ends.
One of the most important rules is to thoroughly dry the attachment area after washing. Don't leave your wefts wet at the scalp for extended periods or go to bed with wet extensions.
We'll explain proper home care after your installation.
9. Can I curl, straighten and style my extensions?
Yes.
Quality human-hair extensions can be blow-dried, curled, and straightened much like your natural hair.
We recommend using a professional heat protectant and avoiding excessive heat. Keeping your extensions healthy and hydrated will help preserve their appearance and longevity.
10. How long does an extension appointment take?
Appointment time depends on how many rows we're installing, whether we're coloring or cutting your natural hair, and how much customization is needed.
We'll give you an estimated appointment time when scheduling your installation.
Maintenance appointments are considerably shorter than your initial installation.
11. What's the difference between a mini move-up and a reinstall?
A mini move-up is a maintenance appointment where we bring your existing rows back closer to your scalp as your natural hair grows. We don't completely remove and rebuild the extensions.
A reinstall is more extensive. We completely remove the extensions, clear away the natural shed hair, and reinstall the foundation and rows.
At FOX & FINCH, we generally recommend mini move-ups every 4–5 weeks, with up to three mini move-ups before a complete reinstall.
12. How many rows of extensions will I need?
It depends entirely on your natural hair and desired result.
Someone wanting subtle fullness may need considerably less hair than someone looking for a major length transformation.
Your consultation helps us determine the right amount of hair without unnecessarily adding weight to your natural hair.
13. Will my extensions match my hair color?
Color matching is an important part of creating extensions that look natural.
We select extension colors based on your natural and/or desired hair color and can use multiple shades when appropriate to create dimension and a seamless blend.
Your extensions should look like your hair—just more of it.
14. Can I wear my hair in a ponytail with extensions?
Yes. Properly placed weft extensions should still let you wear many everyday hairstyles, including ponytails, buns, and half-up styles.
If you frequently wear your hair a particular way, tell us during your consultation. Your lifestyle and styling preferences can help determine extension placement.
15. Can I swim with hair extensions?
Yes, but a little extra care is important. Before swimming, wet your hair with fresh water and secure it in a loose braid to help prevent tangling. After swimming, rinse thoroughly and completely dry your extensions and attachment area.Chlorine, salt water and minerals can cause dryness, buildup and discoloration.
Be careful with sunscreen! Sunscreens containing avobenzone (Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane) and octocrylenecan contribute to blonde or light extensions turning pink, peach, brassy or orange. We recommend choosing a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide and keeping sunscreen off your extensions.
If your extensions become discolored, contact us before attempting to correct them at home.
16. How should I sleep with extensions?
Never go to bed with wet extensions.
Make sure your hair and attachment area are completely dry, gently brush your extensions and secure your hair in a loose braid or other low-tension style before sleeping.
A silk or satin pillowcase can also help reduce friction and tangling.
17. What products should I use on my extensions?
The right home-care products can make a noticeable difference in how your extensions look, feel, and last.
We recommend gentle cleansing, adequate moisture, heat protection, and products that don't create excessive buildup around your attachment points.
We'll recommend a home-care routine based on your particular extensions and natural hair.
18. Can I color my hair while wearing extensions?
Yes, but extension color services should be handled professionally.
Your natural hair can still require root color, highlights, glossing or other maintenance while you're wearing extensions.
Extension hair behaves differently from the hair growing from your scalp, so we don't recommend attempting to lighten or dramatically alter extension hair at home.
19. Can I get weft extensions if I have fine or thin hair?
Possibly.
Fine hair doesn't automatically mean you can't wear extensions. However, extension weight, placement and the health and density of your natural hair become especially important.
Our goal isn't to put the maximum amount of hair on your head. It's to create the result you want without asking your natural hair to support more than it should.
A consultation is the best way for us to determine whether weft extensions are appropriate for you.
20. How do I know when it's time to replace my extension hair?
Extension hair doesn't last forever.
Over time you may notice increased dryness, tangling, shedding, thinning ends or difficulty maintaining the smooth appearance you originally had.
How quickly this happens depends heavily on the quality of the extension hair and how it's cared for.
We'll evaluate your extension hair during your maintenance appointments and let you know when replacing some or all of it would give you a better result.
