If you’ve ever said, “My hair still feels heavy after I wash it,” or “Why is my scalp flaky even though I shampoo?” — this post is for you.
As a stylist serving Succasunna, Roxbury Township, and Morris County, I see it every day: most people aren’t actually cleansing their hair properly. And when your foundation (your scalp) isn’t clean, nothing else works the way it should — not your shampoo, not your conditioner, not your styling products.
Let’s break it down.
Hydration = WATER (Not Oil)
This might surprise you:
Oils do not hydrate your hair.
Hydration comes from water. Oils can be helpful — they smooth, seal, and protect — but they coat the hair shaft. They don’t add moisture inside the strand.
If your hair feels dry even though you’re “using oils,” chances are it’s either:
Not being properly cleansed
Coated with buildup
Not absorbing water effectively
Which brings us to something huge here in New Jersey…
Hard Water & What It’s Doing to Your Hair
If you live in Succasunna, Roxbury, Ledgewood, or Morris County, you are likely dealing with hard water.
Hard water contains mineral deposits that:
Build up on the hair
Make hair feel rough or waxy
Dull shine
Block moisture from penetrating
Cause color to fade faster
Contribute to scalp irritation
That mineral coating makes your shampoo work harder — and sometimes not at all.
👉 We’ll be doing a full follow-up blog post on hard water and your hair, because it deserves its own spotlight.
In the meantime, we offer $10 take-home Malibu treatments at Fox & Finch to help gently remove mineral buildup and reset your hair at home.
How to Actually Cleanse Your Hair Properly
If you want to get the most out of your shampoo, here’s the right way to do it:
Step 1: Rinse First (And Rinse WELL)
Before you even touch shampoo:
Wet your hair thoroughly.
Rinse for 2–3 full minutes.
If you have thick, dense, or textured hair — rinse even longer.
This alone removes:
Surface dirt
Sweat
Loose flakes
Some product buildup
Oils sitting on top of the hair
Skipping this step is one of the biggest mistakes I see.
Step 2: Shampoo Twice
The first shampoo:
Breaks down oils
Lifts buildup
Starts cleansing the scalp
The second shampoo:
Actually cleans the scalp and hair
Allows ingredients to work properly
Gives you that real “clean” feeling
If you don’t wash daily or you use styling products, double cleansing is a must.
Step 3: Condition (Yes, It Matters)
Conditioner:
Restores moisture (remember — water!)
Helps reseal the cuticle
Improves elasticity
Reduces breakage
Adds shine
Apply mid-length to ends unless you specifically need scalp moisture. Rinse thoroughly.
HELP!!! I Have a Flaky Scalp
First — take a breath.
Most people will experience scalp flakes at some point.
Weather changes (hello, New Jersey winters), diet, stress, product buildup, and hard water can all affect scalp health.
I can’t diagnose or treat scalp conditions — but I can share how to remove flakes safely and effectively.
And the good news? Removing flakes is usually pretty simple.
How to Remove Flakes at Home
Option 1: Scalp Scrub Method
Wet hair and rinse thoroughly (2–3 minutes minimum).
Apply a scalp scrub.
Massage gently but thoroughly.
Rinse well.
Shampoo twice.
Condition.
Scalp stimulation:
Boosts circulation
Encourages blood flow
Helps loosen dead skin
Supports a healthier scalp environment
Option 2: No Scrub? Use Conditioner
If you don’t want to use a scrub:
Wet and rinse thoroughly.
Apply conditioner directly to the scalp.
Massage deeply to loosen dead skin.
Rinse very well.
Shampoo twice.
Condition mid-length to ends.
Sometimes you just need to loosen what’s sitting there.
Final Thoughts from Luiza
Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp.
If your hair:
Feels heavy
Looks dull
Gets greasy fast
Has flakes
Doesn’t respond to products
It’s usually a cleansing issue — not a product issue.
At Fox & Finch Salon Studio in Succasunna, we focus on foundational hair health first. Because when your scalp is balanced and your hair is properly cleansed, everything else works better.
If you’re struggling with buildup, flakes, or hard water damage, ask about our in-salon treatments or grab one of our $10 Malibu take-home treatments to reset your hair.
Your hair doesn’t need more oil. It needs proper cleansing and real hydration.
